Mark Williams

Born and raised in Vermont, Mark Williams moved to Brooklyn in 1986 to pursue fine arts at Pratt Institute. There, under the tutelage of Toshio Odate, he received a valuable introduction to a dignified material: wood. In 1991 he received his BFA in sculpture, and 1996 saw the founding of December Box.

For the last ten years, Williams has pursued a course of cross-disciplinary design and fabrication, and has fulfilled commissions in highly diverse fields: from equine hardware; to modern furniture; to museum stands for pedigreed antiques. Materials have spanned from military-spec foams to carbon-fiber, and from iron and bronze castings to slabs of trees from some of Europe’s oldest standing forests.

Both Williams’ father and grandfather had each at one time found employment in the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard, where his atelier is now based. The 1801 Yard is now decomissioned and serves as a highly unique, mixed-use, industrial park, occupied in part by artisans, builders, and film professionals.

Currently, Willliams fulfills bespoke comissions of both his own inovative designs, and those of a growing number of demanding and influential clients.
